It is important when building your personal brand to be self-aware. This means you need to familiarize yourself with your strengths and your weaknesses. Once you understand your weaknesses, you will be able to address them and work to better yourself in those areas.
One of the most dreaded questions in an interview is about your greatest weakness. How do you possibly answer this question truthfully without making yourself look less employable? Keep reading to learn how to answer this question, and how to prove to your potential employer that you are the right person for the job!
In fear of being thought of as unemployable, interviewees attempt to avoid this question and refuse to answer. Don’t take this route. Employers are looking to hire someone who is self-aware, and is willing to acknowledge areas in which they could use improvement. Ultimately, every single one of us have a weakness and are not perfect in every area. Admitting your weakness shows an employer you know who you are and what areas in which you need to improve to become a better employee and individual.
However, simply answering the question isn’t enough. You need to provide the interviewer with an actual weakness; not a strength disguised as a weakness. You need to avoid answers such as: “I work too hard,” “I get too invested in my work,” or “I get upset when I miss a deadline or fall behind.” No one is ever going to admit that they aren’t a hard worker or that they enjoy being behind in their work. Therefore, these are not weaknesses!
Look at your professional skills (not personal weaknesses like shopping too much or eating too much dessert). What are you lacking? Do you struggle with public speaking? Do you struggle with Microsoft Excel? What area do you need to improve in? It is important to note that if your weakness is a key component of the job you are applying for, you may need to come up with another weakness or reevaluate your job options.
Overtime, interviewers have listened to many people answer this question. This means that they know when you’re lying. Stray away from trying to “fluff” who you are. An honest answer shows that you are confident in who you are and your abilities. Employers are looking for real people to hire that are willing to admit when they make a mistake and also show eagerness to improve.
Lastly, employers aren’t interested in learning about your greatest drawbacks. They want to see how you address issues and how willing you are to be proactive and improve yourself and your skills. When you present the interviewer with your greatest weakness, also address how you are working to turn the weakness into a strength. What are you doing to get better?
Ultimately, in order to answer this question, you must first take a look inside yourself. Be honest about your strengths and weaknesses. Figure out how you are going to tackle these obstacles, and then convey this to your potential employer.
