Careers for Women Veterans and Active Duty Service Members
There are many good careers for women veterans out there, but some are better than others. Many women veterans have highly technical skills or have medical skills and can easily transition into industries such as healthcare or information technology.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has projected that over the next ten years, healthcare and information technology as two of the fastest-growing industries in the economy almost 16 million jobs in healthcare and about 3 million jobs in information technology. According to the Department of Veteran Affairs, there are approximately 2 million women veterans. The National Center for Veterans Analysis and Statistics found that in 2015 just 21 percent of all women veterans had a high school diploma or less as their highest level of educational attainment. With so many opportunities available in healthcare and information technology, many female veterans may want to upgrade their knowledge and skills in those fields to boost their chances for employment.
The Veterans Administration has education benefits available for both active duty service members and veterans. Hence, female active duty service members can begin training prior to discharging. Plus, the Veterans Opportunity to Work (VOW) to Hire Heroes Act, signed into law in 2011, allows service members to seek job opportunities while still on active duty. As a result of this law, many public and private sector companies have created programs for hiring veterans, many of whom are women looking for stable, good careers.
